The 2026 Presidents Cup begins its week on Tuesday, September 22, with competition teeing off Thursday at Medinah Country Club in Illinois. And if the betting market is right, the question isn't whether the United States will win, it's whether the International Team can make them sweat.

Team USA is currently -400 to win the Presidents Cup, implying an 80% probability and reflecting a tournament that has historically been dominated by the Americans. The U.S. owns a remarkable 13-1-1 all-time record and has won the last 10 Presidents Cups.

Captain Brandt Snedeker completed his roster Tuesday by selecting Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Chris Gotterup, Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun. They join automatic qualifiers Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Russell Henley, Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa.

Why Team USA Is So Heavily Favored

This roster looks less like a Presidents Cup team and more like a continuation of the American Ryder Cup program.

Scheffler remains the obvious centerpiece, while Schauffele, Thomas, Cantlay and Morikawa provide a deep reservoir of proven team-match-play experience. Gotterup and Koivun add two of the most intriguing young players in American golf, with Koivun arriving after winning the 3M Open only weeks after turning professional.

There is also unfinished business.

Much of this American roster was part of the team that suffered the painful 15-13 Ryder Cup defeat to Europe at Bethpage Black last September. The Americans fell behind 11½-4½ before mounting a remarkable Sunday comeback, only to watch Shane Lowry make the decisive putt that retained the Ryder Cup for Europe.

Call it revenge if you want. The better description may be motivation.

Don't Count Out The World

The International Team has enough firepower to make this uncomfortable.

Geoff Ogilvy's squad includes Hideki Matsuyama, Ryan Fox, Tom Kim, Min Woo Lee, Si Woo Kim and Adam Scott, while his captain's picks added Corey Conners, Sungjae Im, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Nick Taylor, Nico Echavarria and Ryo Hisatsune.

The International advantage is familiarity with adversity. They haven't won the Cup since 1998, but several recent editions have demonstrated how quickly momentum can swing in match play. In 2019, the Internationals actually raced to a 4-1 opening-session lead at Royal Melbourne before the Americans eventually rallied.

Ogilvy can also draw on the wisdom of former International captain Trevor Immelman, whose 2022 team pushed the Americans before ultimately losing 17½-12½. The lesson from Immelman's tenure is simple: pairings, chemistry and belief can neutralize some of the talent gap. The International side won't beat Team USA by trying to out-star them. It has to outplay them as a team.

The price isn't attractive, but the Americans have earned their status as overwhelming favourites. A 13-1-1 historical record, 10 consecutive victories and a roster overflowing with elite talent make the U.S. difficult to fade.

The better strategy may be to shop for a better number than -400 rather than chase the International at +350 simply because the price looks tempting.
