There are underdogs, and then there are underdogs worth a second look. This week, Jalon Daniels and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers present an intriguing opportunity against Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Daniels is an unlikely QB1 to be carrying the hopes of an NFL team, but sometimes the most interesting betting opportunities emerge when expectations are low. The question isn’t necessarily whether Tampa Bay can outduel Rodgers in a shootout. It’s whether Daniels and the Buccaneers can do enough at home to keep this game competitive and cover the spread.
Rodgers brings the experience and pedigree that make Pittsburgh a difficult opponent to dismiss. He knows how to manage a game, capitalize on defensive mistakes, and put his team in position to win. That experience makes the Steelers a dangerous favorite, but it doesn’t automatically make them the right side against the spread.
For Tampa Bay, the formula is relatively straightforward. Daniels needs to protect the football, take what the defense gives him, and avoid putting the Bucs in difficult situations. He seems to be especially skilled at exactly that, even going back to his days leading a Kansas Jayhawks football program from relative obscurity, to a top-25 NCAA ranking.
If Tampa Bay can establish a rhythm offensively, control the tempo, and make Pittsburgh work for every possession, the home side has a path to staying within the number.
This isn’t a prediction that Daniels will suddenly outplay one of the game’s most accomplished quarterbacks. It’s a wager on the possibility that Tampa Bay can make this matchup more competitive than the market expects.
We’re backing the Buccaneers as an underdog to cover at home. Sometimes, the value isn’t in predicting the outright winner. It’s in recognizing when a team has a realistic chance of keeping things close. We hit the target in taking Daniels for the win last week in Dallas, and we'll take the Bucs to at least cover again this week.
