Alvarez’s and PCA’s accomplishments are well documented and well known in MLB circles. There might be a formula, though, for identifying MLB’s offensive instigators—the players who start rallies by getting on base and scoring more commonly than anyone else.

Home runs are awe-inspiring, there is no doubt, but games are won by getting on base by any means available, applying smart baserunning skills, which includes stealing bases, and ultimately, scoring runs.

No surprise here, but the Royals’ shortstop is the quintessential catalyst.

What separates him from the rest on this list is his power, which doesn’t weigh heavily in the formula, but still stands out when compared with the other table setters on the list.

2. Brice Turang — 89/100

Brewers manager Pat Murphy has stacked his lineup with power at the top in Jackson Chourio, but Turang, in the two-slot, often sparks the rallies, with Andrew Vaughn and William Contreras frequently cashing him in.

Turang sits at around a 115 wRC+ and has scored 87 runs—the ideal table setter.

3. Otto Lopez — 87/100

The Marlins shortstop has been hitting over .300 all season and just recently swiped his 30th stolen base of 2026.

His 84 runs are impressive given the young lineup surrounding him, which is still trying to find its groove in power and run production.

With Lopez, the Fish are in plenty of games where they might otherwise have put donuts up on the scoreboard.
