The Toronto Blue Jays hoped they had acquired the player with the higher offensive ceiling when they sent popular outfielder Joey Loperfido back to Houston in exchange for Jesus Sanchez.

Now, as the second full month of the 2026 season comes to a close, the reward in acquiring Sanchez is beginning to outweigh the risk of losing the multi tooled Loperfido.

Sanchez is seizing the moment after being inserted into the three spot in the Blue Jays batting order, with team home run leader Kazuma Okamoto hitting cleanup behind him.

This power combination was not what Blue Jays management envisioned heading into the season, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Anthony Santander were expected to anchor the heart of the lineup.

Modified Lineup - New Possibilities

Unfortunately for Santander, a lingering shoulder injury has kept him on the IL since spring training. Now, after being hit on the right elbow by a Mitch Keller fastball last weekend, Guerrero is also sidelined.

If there is a silver lining for this struggling Jays offence, it is that manager John Schneider now has little choice but to keep Sanchez and Okamoto exactly where they are as the club’s primary power threats.

Sanchez has always possessed tremendous raw power. Across more than six seasons in Major League Baseball, he has produced highlight reels filled with towering home runs traveling well beyond 450 feet. He combines elite bat speed with outstanding exit velocity, driving the ball hard to all fields.

With a firm vote of confidence and the assurance of everyday playing time, there is no telling just how dangerous Sanchez can become as a home run hitter.

Blue Jays fans got a glimpse of that potential last night when Sanchez broke the game open with a sixth inning grand slam against 2022 National League Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, helping power Toronto topple the Marlins with an 8-1 victory.
